SUMMARY: Quick note to specify that Helios is from mangaverse only, but I'll sometimes use the anime as inspiration for themes and if it's plausible that they could mesh, I'll try to work it in or something to develop or work towards.

Helios is a priest who resides in a holy shrine within the mystical realm of Elysion, a place said to exist within the heart of the planet Earth. He once served the Earth's Golden Kingdom before it all fell to ruin, and since the world's reincarnation has continued with his duties for millennia with only the two maenads at his side. From Elysion Helios is able to protect and watch over the Earth, using his powers of purification when necessary. Due to his role, he is directly connected to both the Earth and Mamoru, acting as Mamoru's guardian.

To quickly sum up the Dream Arc, Nehellenia from the Dead Moon invades Earth through a solar eclipse and strikes down Helios with a curse as she attempts to find the Golden Crystal. Trapped in Elysion he is only able to seek help through his Pegasus form. Before this Helios had received a premonition to seek out the young maiden of beautiful dreams, Sailor Moon. He appears before both Usagi and Chibiusa, but he bonds with Chibiusa. He eventually reunites with Mamoru, informs them of everything, romances with Chibiusa, lots of fighting, Mamoru has the Golden Crystal, more fighting, until near the end he uses all of his powers to help their final battle. Although believed to be dead, Chibiusa is able to reawaken him with a kiss and inadvertently helps reveal her own pink moon crystal. With Nehellenia dead and Elysion restored, Helios sends them off, promising Chibiusa that they will meet again in the future, and returns to his duties in Elysion.

wheeze THAT'S THE BASICS OF IT.

IN-DEPTH: link; In terms of demeanor, Helios is your all around nice guy. He's polite, gentle, kind, helpful, and given his real age, he has ample wisdom and maturity, always ready to give advice or reassurances if needed. He is patient, tolerant, but he isn't a pushover. He has strong morals and sense of righteousness and justice. Against evil and any threats or danger, he will stand up to fight with all he has. But despite his age and wisdom, he's always lived in Elysion and thus naturally curious about everything outside of his realm. He knows about what's going on the surface, but never experienced it himself. Because of his polite demeanor, he can also be naturally charming without realizing it, but he can also be a little playful.

tl;dr he's a pure cinnamon roll.

His main source of power is Elysion itself as he is able to channel that energy outward. When separated from Elysion, his powers are diminished considerably, but he can still hold his own as a strong support class. For a quick list: healing and purification, protective spells and barriers, teleportation over short distances. He can also view and enter the dreams of others.

JOURNAL: White Version | Medallion
RESIDENCE: Key | A quaint little cottage deep in the woods outside of the Index.
ABILITIES: He will be cut off from Elysion so he won't have access to any of his original abilities. Instead he'll have:
  • Transformation: capable of transformation into various animal forms, but he will sticking mostly to his familiar Pegasus form
  • Healing and purification: able to heal wounds and a little bit of purification. It starts basic level and will advance in effectiveness over time. However, he'll never be able to bring someone back to life or heal someone from fatal wounds.
  • Dreams and prophecies: he'll be capable of having brief, prophetic flashes during dreams, but it's random and sometimes so brief it's not very reliable. But it could be used for something later, be it for the game or for other players. As for dreams, I'd like for him to be able to see and enter dreams at some point (after a few campaigns and with player permission)
  • Elemental magic: most basic elemental spells but is a little out of a his control at first. Fire and light are his strongest elements with dark magic not something he'd delve into. He might be able to create minor blessings for protection.
POSSESSIONS: Other than the satchel and journal, he'll have a staff.

BACKGROUND

Quick note: This Helios is taken strictly from the original manga arc. The original 90s anime version of the Dream Arc is SuperS, and while the anime had the same cast of characters, themes, and base story, the actual plotline is vastly different. Crystal version of this arc has yet to be aired, though it should be more in line with the manga version. Additinally, this background section is primarily focusing on Helios's own appearances and actions, so some of the plotline/events will be skimmed or completely skipped over (this is mostly to cut down on length since, well, it's already fairly long). A complete full review can be found here. Also—yes I switch between referring the characters by their real name and transformed names depending on which form is appearing. As annoying as it is, it's mostly to keep in spirit with the canon as they do that as well.

To start things off, let's talk about some of the backdrop of the setting and players so it makes sense. In the Sailor Moon universe, not only was there once a kingdom on the moon, but there was also one on Earth. This kingdom was called the Golden Kingdom and was located in a holy land called Elysion. Although the kingdoms no longer exist, Elysion continues to serve to protect the Earth and rests deep within the planet. It's described as almost like a living heart. Just as Usagi is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, Mamoru is the reincarnation of Prince Endymion of the Golden Kingdom. As the Earth's prince he is able to feel when the planet is suffering.

Within Elysion is a shrine that serves to protect the earth and the hopes and dreams of those who live within it. Along with two priestesses known as "Maenads," Helios serves as the priest who guards over it. Not only that, but like Mamoru, Helios is connected to the earth, and by extension to Mamoru himself for he is Mamoru's guardian. In his words, this is how he describes the relationship:

"Just as this planet and the plane of Elysion are linked, so is your life linked with mine. The prince with Earth, and me with Elysion. All four of us rely on each other, we are interdependent."

Finally, one last piece of backdrop to explain is this arc's main villain: Queen Nehellenia and the Dead Moon Circus. Thousands of years ago Nehellenia made her presence known during Princess Serenity's birth ceremony. Portrayed as like the dark side of the moon—the dark mirror image of the white Moon Kingdom, she placed a curse on the kingdom to fall. Queen Serenity would seal her away in the mirror, but Nehellenia's curse would come true, the Silver Millennium eventually falling into ruins. Desiring the Earth and its prince to rule over it, Nehellenia would have her chance for revenge.

Not too long before the arc begins, Helios receives a revelation—a vision—from a young woman who tells him that he and Elysion will face a hard trial ahead and that he must find the Golden Crystal. But to break its seal, he must find a young maiden.

"She is the carrier of a beautiful dream. She is protected by the light of the moon, a soldier and a princess."

The one who gives him this revelation is "Princess Lady Serenity," and not long afterward Queen Nehellenia begins her attack. She first strikes at Elysion, and although Helios tries to protect it, his powers are not enough. Eventually the curse spreads and takes over, turning the once beautiful land to a darkened wasteland of nightmares. While the Maenads are saved by being sealed in Elysion's purification crystals, Helios is captured and trapped in a cage, the curse locking him in his alternate Pegasus form. However, though his body remains caged, he is able to send his spirit out to the surface.

With the words foretold to him, he finds Chibiusa, Usagi, and Mamoru. It is the day Chibiusa is supposed to return to the 30th century, and the day when the once in a lifetime solar eclipse occurs. While Nehellenia's Dead Moon Circus sneaks onto the Earth through the solar eclipse, Helios (in his Pegasus form) comes to them, saying he has finally found his young maiden. Given that he appears before both of the girls, it's unclear which one is the "young maiden" he seeks.

Even so, he appears before Chibiusa in her dreams, giving her a ride on his back so that she could see the city and reveal some of his identity and his purpose. He also gives her a bell from which she would be able to summon him at any time. For the most part, Helios remains as a supportive role. He gives Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon the power needed to create their own weapons to deal with the Dead Moon Circus.

When Usagi and Chibiusa are cursed and switch forms, upon seeing Chibiusa's adult form he begins to believe she is indeed the one he seeks, but later Chibiusa tells him that it must be Sailor Moon that he's looking for. When he later confirms that Sailor Moon is Princess Serenity, Chibiusa runs away, having always believed she did not have the strength or power to help him. However, he chases after her and kisses her, telling her that she is just as strong and necessary. She also reveals to her his true human form and that he would always be by her side.

Eventually he must reveal the entire truth about himself, Elysion, the Earth, and Mamoru as Prince Endymion, revealing the black rose that rest within both of their chests as the sign of the curse. After learning the truth, the group rushes to join the rest of the Sailor Scouts fighting against Dead Moon. But all would not go well when Nehellenia strikes and attacks Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask.

Helios is able to interfere, transporting the two to Elysion where the remaining purification powers are able to stop the curse and return them to their original forms. There Helios is able to show them the state of Elysion as well as more details about the vision he had and their past. Usagi is able to figure out that the Golden Crystal must lie within Mamoru himself. But before they can do more, Nehellenia discovers their whereabouts and attacks. Once again Helios is able to shield them and sends them back to the surface where they would rejoin the group and start the final battle. With his final prayer and last of his powers, Helios channels Elysion to help purify the surface above to aid them.

Eventually the battle would be brought back down to Elysion and with everyone's combined powers and own awakenings, Usagi is able to transform into Eternal Sailor Moon and destroy Nehellenia. Immediately the curse is lifted and Elysion begins to heal. Helios lies on the ground, presumably dead, but Chibi Moon is able to revive him through true love's kiss the power of her own Pink Moon Crystal.

Together, Usagi and Mamoru, now in their forms of Serenity and Endymion, are able to completely cleanse the land and earth from Nehellenia's darkness. Helios returns everyone to the surface and wishes them well. He promises Chibiusa that they would meet again one day and that he would eagerly await with all his heart. He then returns to Elysion where he would resume his duties of praying for the earth's and everyone's safety and protection.

And then the Stars arc happens and things go crazy, but that's a problem for his future self that no one knows what happens because he doesn't appear in it. Thanks Takeuchi.

------------------------------------------------

PERSONALITY

Helios is first and foremost very dedicated to his role as the high priest of Elysion and a protector of the earth. He will not shirk his duties and will do all that he possibly can to fulfill them. If that means he must search for those who are capable of stronger powers, then he will not stop until he finds them. If it means that he must offer himself to help provide support he will. This leads into how Helios will place others first before himself, which makes sense since his life has been one of looking over and protecting others. But he does not mind his role, as he actually finds it a great honor that he can support and protect those who are more important than him. Of course, his role of support and protection isn't just out of duty. He's sincere in his ways as he genuinely does wish the best for all.

In terms of demeanor, Helios is your all around nice guy. He's polite, gentle, kind, helpful, and always ready to give advice or reassurances if someone is upset. He is quick and willing to give respect and deference to others. This also means that while he knows he has great power, he is humble about it. His abilities are to be used, not bragged about, and more importantly they are to be used for the benefit of others. More importantly, only for good. If someone evil tries to use him, he will instead refuse. He's also honest, not really one to lie except when necessary. Even then he feels guilty about hiding the truth, but he knows he must for the greater good. Finally, he believes in the hopes and dreams of others. Always praying for a better future, even when trapped in darkness he will seek for that beautiful light that will help guide him, never stopping until he's truly reached the end. An all around gentleman, he gives off that friendly, gentle air that could automatically give someone a sense of calm and ease.

This doesn't mean he's weak-willed, however. He has strong morals and sense of righteousness and justice. Against evil and any threats or danger, he will stand up to fight with all he has. Even when subdued and captured, he has the strength and power to send his spirit to find those who can help. Even when directly facing Queen Nehellenia herself, he defies her despite knowing she would retaliate. And then even under intense pain he wills himself to hold it together, knowing that his prince's life, Elysion, and the earth are at stake. As he told her himself, she may break his body but she would never be able to break his spirit. This strong willpower is not only born from his own strength and courage, but also because he believes that good will prevail. That light will vanquish the darkness, and so his strength and courage is ultimately riding on that strong hope. Thus while he may not be a warrior or brandish any swords, Helios is just as strong and courageous in his own way.

In terms of his own actions, Helios is both passive and active. Because he cannot fight, he must rely on others for that strength. He will send his prayers and support to them, as that is the best he can do. However, I believe that he wouldn't solely rely on someone else to do something and just stand around. Instead, even if he's overmatched he would step in to help anyone in need. He would even use his own body as a shield to protect an innocent while at the same time confronting the wrongdoer. This stems from his strong desire to protect others. Of course he knows his own limitations and knows that he cannot win a fight, but he can at least help and hold out long enough to those more capable arrive. Additionally, violence would be a last resort, mostly because he knows he's weaker. He is more likely to try and dissuade or defuse the situation, try to calm others down while still being polite and friendly. But if he has to scold or lecture, he will do so.

Most of his attitude and personality is likely due to his age. Having lived for thousands of years and watching over the Earth, he knows its history, the general way of how humans work, how to use various powers and abilities—he may not be intellectually smart, but he is rather knowledgeable. This means he has a more mature outlook in life and thus acts as such. He is not rash, instead trying to be careful and considerate. This allows him to be more understanding of others, particularly those who are still growing and learning through experiences. On that same coin, he cherishes the more youthful innocence, as he finds it all the more endearing and recognizes that such youth is what allows dreams to be born.

However, despite his real age he is also depicted as fairly young, looking no older than a young teenager. While he might not act like a normal one, he does have a boyish charm and freely expresses joy when he feels it. Since most of the canon has him deal with serious matters, there's little opportunity to see how he is under more normal, more carefree circumstances. But he is by no means portrayed as just a subdued, reserved type of individual. There are occasions where he expresses joy, and has hints of potential playfulness. Thus if given the chance, Helios could learn how to have more freedom and luxury and thus experience more natural fun. He would likely never be highly energetic, but he would still gladly participate and enjoy things with all his heart.

Speaking of the heart, this section would not be complete without talking about Chibiusa and their relationship. The two do share romantic moments, and there is a strong possibility that they may end up together in the future. For Helios, although Usagi is the one to help break the Golden Crystal's seal, Chibiusa is the "young maiden" he had been seeking from the start. Rather than Usagi, he is attracted to Chibiusa's light, visiting her dreams and seeking her strength and company. Even after he learns that Usagi is the real Princess Serenity, he chooses to give more of his support to Chibiusa. What made Helios actually fall in love with her is speculation, but there is some stress on Chibiusa's purity and innocence in her heart and dreams. How she wishes to be stronger and have the same strength as Sailor Moon so she can protect those she loves. Given that it was Chibiusa from the future who gave Helios the revelation, one could also say that it's also perhaps destiny.

But an experience in love isn't the the only thing Chibiusa gives him. She also provides him with courage and strength, and a reason outside of his duty to fight for. Helios gains something more personal, for now it's not only the earth and its people that he wishes to protect, but also his young maiden. She is the light that pulls him out of the darkness and is able to give him hope and relief during the time of his curse. And finally, she is the one who is able to give him his life back. For that he will forever be grateful and happy that she was his young maiden all along.

------------------------------------------------

ABILITIES

Helios's abilities are a bit...ambiguous so just going to stick with what is clear and then put in some theory. To quickly note, it would appear that the red gem on his forehead is how he's able to use his powers.

  • Astral projection. Helios is able to send his spirit completely away from his body and leave it out for long periods of time. Of course he eventually has to return to it, but he uses this method to speak with those far away (in canon's case, essentially inner world dimensional planes). His spiritual form can either be his Pegasus form or his human form.

  • Pegasus. Not only does he have the ability to send his spirit off, but he can also transform into a white, golden horned pegasus (aka alicorn, but he's called "Pegasus" so sticking with that) as an alternate form. As Pegasus, he doesn't really have any additional abilities outside of his own normal ones.

  • Entering dreams. This was played on more in the anime, but in the manga Helios is capable of entering Chibiusa's dreams and likely could enter the dreams of others if he needed to. This is only through his spirit form and honestly he probably wouldn't unless the individual was in distress. I don't really see it happening much if at all while in Emp, but hey—if we ever have a dream plot or someone wants to do something with that, might as well mention!

  • Gem beam projector. Seriously, that red gem on his forehead acts as like some kind of light projector that can reveal things. However, how this ability actually works is... Kind of unclear since it was only used to reveal the black rose in Mamoru's chest. So this won't really be used if ever.

  • Being Elysion's priest. Basically a catch all category of the things he's been shown to do. Although he calls himself nothing more than a humble priest and not as strong as Sailor Moon and the others, he's still plenty powerful given his role.

    • World sensing. Connected to the Earth, Helios can sense when there is danger and shares in its pain. This isn't going to have much play in Emp since he won't have that connection, however if it's all right, he may be able to sense the general emotions that the world is suffering.

    • Power of prayer. Helios has the ability to protect and hold back dangerous effects from the earth for some periods of time. Of course he can't hold out forever, and that is why needs the help of Sailor Moon, but he does pretty well. He is capable of sharing some of his power, manifesting it in small objects that can connect the user to him and allow them to summon him when needed. He is also able to transfer all of his power to serve as a major power boost, but he is essentially offering his entire self up when that occurs. He's also been shown to place protective barriers as well as some minor purification abilities. Other than that, he can probably do other "cleric class type" small things like minor healing magic and just being all pure and good like that. (Plus whatever he can't do he can make up for it with dunamis.)

    • Teleportation. He is apparently powerful enough to transport people to Elysion, although that's not applicable for Emp. What he might be able to do is under great stress or danger is transport people to short distances, and only locations that he knows. But that's only if it's okay with you guys. Alternatively, it could be something that is developed via emotions/dunamis, essentially using his canon ability as a base but having to modify it to fit this world instead. Otherwise, everyone walks.

  • Connection with Mamoru. As mentioned, Helios is connected to Mamoru's spirit. However... How it works is a bit vague and somewhat contradictory. For instance, he was unable to actually locate Mamoru by himself, only knowing generally that his prince was reincarnated. It appears that he can sense when Mamoru is in danger or in pain, but while Mamoru can certainly be affected by whatever is inflicted on Helios, the other way around doesn't seem to be the case. If I had to give a comparison, Helios is to Mamoru as the Sun is to the Earth. If something were to happen to the Sun, the Earth would be directly affected. But if something were to happen to the Earth, nothing would really change for the Sun in terms of condition. Yet if the Sun were sentient, it would know and feel the loss of the Earth. If a Mamoru were to ever appear in game, I'll gladly work out whatever weird connection they're supposed to have. In the meantime, Helios does not have the connection since he's in a completely different world.

Because Helios won't be connected to Elysion while in-game, any powers that relied on Elysion are either gone completely or weakened. He will also not be able to call upon the game world's power.

Finally—Helios is not physically strong. Let's face it, the "kid" is in a shrine all day praying. Not really a chance or incentive to work out. While his Pegasus form will have the natural strength of a horse, Helios won't be any stronger than your average scholar type.
